1:1
Last summer together with @lizzz.jpeg we tutored 1:1 workshop at the European Architecture Students’ Assembly @easaswitzerland in Villars-sur-Ollon, Switzerland. 1:1 was a conceptual workshop about creating immaterial landscape art installations in the astonishing scenery of the Swiss Alps. The workshop was born on and of the location. Although the workshop was site-specific it was not tied to any one place. We used the landscape around and between Villars-sur-Ollon, Col de Bretaye and Alpage en Conche, and subtly transformed the selected locations momentarily into something else. Landscape art was created by using light, smoke, sound, and scents. The temporary installations were experienced collectively, mostly during nightly walks in big groups. We wanted to change perceptions of places through temporary interventions, creating site-specific collective memories. By using the scale of the landscape we created immaterial installations that were not meant just to be seen; they were events you had to take part in to experience them.
The installations included an artificial cloud produced indoors during the workshop presentations; an installation at the Info Pavilion, bringing the sounds and smells of the mountains to the village; two collective nightly walks with series of installations, one following a stream downhill, and another at a forest with the theme “Fear of Dark”; a sleeping concert done in collaboration with the INTRO workshop, and a breakfast served after it in the middle of a forest; and a lunch served at an abandoned hut, inhabiting it once more for a short period of time. The workshop finished with a large-scale landscape art installation formed by 441 people standing in a square grid on a mountain slope, which was the official group photo for EASA TOURIST 2019.
