OAAS
Tutors: Joonas Parviainen, Ella Prokkola
OAAS is a construction workshop on communal gardening and the possibilities of negative spaces. We examine a way of using the empty spaces in the urban fabric caused by the town’s de-growth strategy. Our aim is to create a community garden, which can be used by the local community of Valga residents.
OAAS responds to apathy by cultivating citizisens’ connection to the land, food chains, local community and immediate surroundings. A key point of the workshop is to support and create possibilities for local food production and environmental education. We also want to bring people together for communal events and activities.
The obstacles of current development of Valga are currently the lack of people working for the city and the scarcity of funds needed for green area development. By creating a communal garden we wish to give the citizens a permission to take care and look after
their urban surroundings.
their urban surroundings.
The conctruction materials of the community garden are taken from demolished buildings. We ́re lookingfor bricks, windows and other available materials. We ́d like reuse the existing foundations of demolished buildings and repair them by giving the structures a new function. We acknowledge the trauma caused by Valga ́s urban decay, and want to examine withlocals the possibility to take the future of their town on their own hands.

miniworkshop: antiapathy pizza oven
We are inviting guest tutors Miki Sordi and Mahdi Biagoli to conduct a 2-day workshop at the site. The pop-up workshop will build a pizza oven, which can be used by the local gardeners. We think getting some herbs from your own garden really uplifts a pizza experience. The workshop is open for anyone interested to join.
When the pizza oven is ready we will have a pizza + beer party on the site. We ́re seekingfor a sponsorship from a local brewery. The party invites locals and easians to eat, exchange thoughts and celebrate life together. It also introduces the community garden to the public and shows the potential of the formerly unused space.
